Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Jobs in Rhode Island

POSITION SUMMARY

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) work under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs), interacting directly with patients providing basic care and assisting them with daily living activities. CNAs serve their patients meals and help them eat as well as assist their patients in cleaning, bathing, using the restroom and getting dressed. They are also responsible for turning or repositioning bedridden patients and transferring them between beds and wheelchairs. In addition to helping with daily activities, CNAs also measure vital signs such as blood pressure and temperature and dispense medication as needed. In residential care facilities, CNAs are often the principal caregivers to their patients.

COMMON SKILLS NEEDED

Communication

  • CNAs act as a liaison between their patients and other healthcare workers
  • Ability to listen and respond to patient concerns, and share pertinent information with supervising RNs

Compassionate/Empathetic

  • Important to be respectful especially when working with injured, sick and/or elderly patients who can’t otherwise care for themselves

Patience

  • Interacting with patients can be stressful; CNAs must remain calm while performing daily routine tasks such as cleaning, feeding and bathing

Physical Stamina

  • CNAs spend most of their days on their feet

TYPICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current RI CNA certification
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
