Free to Eligible Rhode Island Residents

UA Local 51 (Riverside, RI)

The Rhode Island Makers Training Program is a free 5-week welding training program where candidates will participate in a 40-hour work readiness boot camp to prepare them for the rigor of the program before beginning the 100+ hour welding training.

Candidates will learn new skills including the use and care of tools, OSHA 10, safety in the workplace, basic welding theory, equipment training, basic math, and practical application. This training, coupled with the work readiness boot camp will prepare candidates for a variety of hands-on careers throughout Rhode Island.

The RI Makers Team is comprised of a highly talented group of urban community organizations, economic and community planning firms and is directed by a leading labor union. Together, they have collaborated under the previous RI Urban Apprenticeship and Welding To Work programs to design and deliver a sustainable recruitment, supportive services and pre-apprentice training program, connecting Rhode Island’s fastest growing population segment – low and moderate income, urban minorities – to high demand, high wage and high skill employment opportunities in the pipefitting, plumbing and welding trades, all within H-1B industry occupations.

Employers share a need for candidates in manufacturing, distribution, warehouse and other related RI Maker Industries. Few job candidates possess the baseline skills necessary for careers in the field. Local employers struggle to find qualified individuals to fill open positions, and they face long-term shortages in this career path by retiring Baby Boomers. By collaborating, the businesses are creating a qualified pool of candidates and keeping these full-time, well-paying jobs in the region. The course curriculum focuses on core competencies common to all of their industries.
